Let us tell you a story with Frida King’s Pressed Glass Mezcal Tasting Set: The heart of Mexico just a sip away.
Pulque is a traditional Mexican alcoholic beverage made from the fermented sap of the maguey plant, a variety of agave native to central Mexico. This ancient drink has a rich history dating back to pre-Hispanic times, when it was considered sacred and consumed during religious ceremonies by the Aztecs and other indigenous peoples. Pulque has a unique milky, slightly viscous texture and a tangy, somewhat sour flavor that can be an acquired taste for newcomers. Unlike tequila or mezcal, which are distilled, pulque is only fermented, resulting in a lower alcohol content, typically ranging from 2% to 8%.
Back in the 1900 and forward to Mexican Revolution times, Pulque gained its higher popularity, it was highly consumed among population and vessels to contain it varied in order to the size of the serving 1 lt, ½ lt, ¼ lt or a sip sample. All of the different sizes come in a variety of designs. Considered today as vintage pieces, perhaps historical, they’re artisanal made with vintage green pressed-glass techniques that still preserve.
In this collection we’re sharing two of them:
Catrina - Also known as “small cacariza” holds ½ lt.
Chivito - Also known as “chivato” holds 1/3 lt.
Today, pulque enjoys a resurgence in popularity among both locals and tourists seeking an authentic taste of Mexico’s rich culinary heritage, often found in traditional pulquerías where it is served plain or flavored with natural fruits (curados).
